The vision for RAF Coltishall has the potential to transform a disused brownfield site into a model eco settlement of National significance and it is therefore vital that the vision is designed to maximise its potential for sustainability. It recognises that a step change in quality is required which is not confined to purely visual considerations but also to climate change, construction and long-term management of the new settlement. The vision encompasses management of development activities to minimise the risk of pollution and contamination and promote the concept and aims of biodiversity. In developing the design, we will comply with all relevant environmental legislation and will strive to meet best practice in non-regulated areas. Sustainable development as defined by the Rio declaration of 1992 is 'development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'. To achieve this objective, the government has identified four core objectives:
Environmental, social and economic concerns are addressed at a development-wide level. The layout, proportion and disposition of land-uses illustrated in the vision for RAF Coltishall have been determined with social equity and economic sustainability in mind. Renewable energy sources will be used wherever possible to provide power to public and private buildings and spaces. Houses will be designed to comply with the "code of sustainable homes" and all buildings will seek to match or exceed the relevant targets. |
